How Does Elastra Pricing Work?

Elastra’s pricing is consumption-based, meaning you pay only for what you use. There are no upfront capital expenditures or contracts with minimum usage commitments. This means that the cost hurdle and time-to-value to develop, test and deliver new applications has dropped dramatically, and your ability to gain business value from your applications has increased significantly.

Our Elastra Cloud Server On Demand software is priced by the hour. The unit of measure is the Elastic Compute Unit (ECU), which is per software instance-based. For each software instance you deploy (e.g. each database node, software load-balancer, etc.), an ECU rating is assigned (e.g. 1 ECU*, .25 ECU*, etc.), and there is an hourly charge per ECU (e.g. 50 cents/hour*).

ECUs are analogous to wattage on a light bulb, and our on-demand pricing and billing is analogous to the way electricity is priced and billed. Just as higher wattage light bulbs draw more power but give off more light than lower wattage light bulbs, software instances and clusters that are more complicated to configure, deploy and manage have higher ECU ratings than those that are less complicated. A database is more complex than a proxy load balancer - thus a database ECU rating is higher than a load balancer ECU rating.

The more ECUs you consume, the more you are billed. The fewer you consume, the less you are billed. The end result is that you pay only for what you use, and your expenses scale in line with your business needs.

What Is an Elastic Compute Unit (ECU)?

An ECU is a per software instance-based unit of measure. The more complex a software component instance is to configure, deploy and manage, the higher its ECU rating. Just as higher wattage light bulbs give off more light and draw more power than lower wattage bulbs, higher ECU-rated software instances cost more, and lower ECU-rated software instances cost less. The more ECUs you consume, the more you pay - the fewer you consume, the less you pay.

The end result is:

  • When you stop an instance, your charges also stop
  • You only pay for what you use
  • Expenses scale in line with your business need

How Are Server, Storage and Network Charges Handled?

The CPU, storage and network resources you use are also consumption-based and charged by the hour. Elastra provisions and pays for the AWS resources you use and includes these charges in your monthly bill. No need to create a separate AWS account or deal with separate billing. We provide an integrated, seamless solution which includes the AWS resources consumed with our offering.

The table below provides an example of how pricing for our solution works:

Software Components* ECU Rating (A) Cost/ECU/Hour ($)
(B)
Component Hourly Rate (AxB=C) # of Instances Consumed (D) Total Hourly Cost ($)
(CxD=E)
Database Instance 1 $.50 $.50 1 $.50
Application Server Instance 1 $.50 $.50 1 $.50
Software Load Balancer Instance .25 $.50 $.13 1 $.13
Software Charges Sub-Total         $1.13
Server Charges**     Cost/Unit/Hour ($)

Elastra allows you to unlock the value of the cloud by making it easier, faster and more cost-effective to configure, deploy, scale and manage your applications in the cloud. Our Elastic Computing pricing also simplifies the way you pay for the computing resources you consume.
